Driving licenses issued in any Member State of the European Union or in States Parties to the Agreement on the European Economic Area in accordance with Community regulations shall remain valid in Spain, under the conditions in which they were issued in their place of origin, with the proviso that the age required for driving will correspond to that required to obtain the equivalent Spanish permit.
However, driving licenses issued by any of those States that are restricted, suspended or withdrawn in any of them or in Spain will not be valid for driving in Spain.
The holder of a driving license issued in one of these States that has acquired his normal residence in Spain will be subject to the Spanish provisions regarding its period of validity, control of his psychophysical aptitudes and assignment of a points credit.
In the case of a driving license not subject to a specific period of validity, the owner must proceed to renew it, after two years have elapsed since establishing his normal residence in Spain.
For the processing of the driving license exchange, the following documentation is necessary:
The signature of the necessary forms available at Vives Pons & Asociados office, to provide a valid National Identity Document or NIE or Passport and any other means of proof to prove residence, the original community driving license in force, 1 photograph passport type and the payment of the corresponding fee.
The delivery period of the new Spanish driver's license is approximately 2 months.
